We are a very family orientated practice. We see patients from as young as six months old, or when the first tooth comes through. We will always do our best to establish a calm, caring environment within the surgery to allow our youngest patients to feel at ease. We spend time explaining details and acclimatising children with a ‘tell, show,do’ approach.
We are very much focused on prevention. Our aim is to help the children we see to know how to look after their teeth well. We will discuss diet, fluoride toothpaste and effective toothbrushing with both the child and parent.
We want to try to prevent future dental disease and help the children have strong healthy teeth.
We undertake all aspects of children’s dental care from preventative measures such as fissure sealants and fluoride varnish to more complex processes such as dental fillings, stainless steel crown placement and tooth extractions.
We are part of the Scottish Government campaign Childsmile which aims to improve the health of children’s teeth.
Dental Care Tips for Children
1. A regular teeth-cleaning routine is essential for children.
2. Start to brush your baby’s gums with a soft toothbrush as part of their routine.
3. Start brushing your baby’s teeth with fluoride toothpaste as soon as the first baby tooth breaks through (usually around six months, but it can be earlier or later).
4. Brush your child’s teeth for at least two minutes twice a day, once just before bedtime and once in the morning.
5. Always use a Fluoride toothpaste.
The reason we carry out hygiene treatments is that we need to care for not only the teeth but the gums too. Hygiene services help prevent, treat and reduce the progress of gum disease.
A simple scale and polish involves removal of plaque, tartar and staining from the teeth using an ultrasonic cleaner, hand instruments and a polishing cup.
A deep clean or more advanced Periodontal treatment will be completed over two or more appointments. Involving charting disease levels, removal of plaque, tartar and staining from above and below the gum line. You will usually require more regular follow up appointments.
Air Polish which is a non-invasive dental cleaning treatment that combines air, cleaning powder and a gentle jet of water to quickly remove dental plaque, soft deposits and stains from the tooth surface.
If you wish to discuss any of the hygiene treatments available or have concerns about your gum health please discuss this with one of our dentists at your next appointment.
Air Polish Tooth Polishing is an innovative and non-invasive dental cleaning treatment that combines air, cleaning powder and a gentle jet of water to quickly remove dental plaque, soft deposits and stains from the tooth surface.
The procedure takes about 30 minutes.
It is comfortable with a gentle stream of water that is kind to the tooth surface. Patients with tooth sensitivity can also be a good candidate for an Air Polish because it is a gentle and quick procedure, and there is no contact with the teeth.
It is especially effective for patients with tooth staining.
The benefits of Air Polish
Extractions
If you are interested in discussing the Air Polish treatmOur preventative approach to dental care means we will try and avoid losing teeth if possible. However sometimes this is unavoidable and it can be the best treatment decision.
Our team will do our best to explain the procedure, make it as pain free as possible and give aftercare advice to enable a quick recovery.
Crowns and Bridges
Crowns and bridges are prosthetic dental devices that are permanently fixed in your mouth. Crowns and bridges are cemented onto existing teeth or implants, and can only be removed by your dentist.
Crowns
A crown is used to cover a tooth. This can be for various reasons, for example, to strengthen a damaged or fractured tooth, to provide a ‘seal’ after a root canal treatment has been completed or to improve the appearance, shape or alignment of a tooth.
Crowns can be made of several different materials.
Porcelain or Ceramic crowns are tooth coloured and they can be matched to the color of your natural teeth.
Gold and metal alloys are strong and used for crowns on back teeth in less visible positions due to their functional ability.
Porcelain bonded to metal crowns which afford the strength of the metal but allow a more aesthetic appearance.
Bridges
A bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth. They span the gap where the teeth are missing. Bridges are cemented onto the natural teeth or implants on either one or both sides on the space.
The teeth holding the bridge in place are called abutments. The tooth that is being replaced is called a pontic. Dependent on the location of the missing tooth and your bite the abutment(s) can either be full crowns or metal wings that bond onto the abutment and support the pontic.
The same as crowns, bridges can be made of different materials. Your dentist will discuss the different options of porcelain bonded and ceramic but the bridge will be tooth coloured and matched as closely as possible to the neighbouring teeth.
Veneers
Veneers are very fine porcelain coverings which bond to the front surface of teeth. Veneers enable us to correct discoloured or misaligned teeth and they are sometimes used instead of orthodontics to improve a smile.
The benefits of veneers are they involve much less removal of tooth structure than a full crown and they have a very natural appearance due to the fine layer of porcelain still allowing light to transfer through. However, they are not suitable for everyone and if you are interested in learning more please speak to your dentist.
If you are interested in considering Dental Veneers please discuss this with one of our dentists at your next appointment.
Tooth Whitening
Everyone’s tooth colour is different – a bit like hair colour and eye colour.
Using a whitening toothpaste will not change the colour of your teeth, it will only remove surface stains, so the only way to really get a whiter smile is by dentist led tooth whitening. It is an affordable way to really make your smile brighter!
We take impressions of your teeth and construct custom made bleaching trays for you to then carry out the whitening process in the comfort of your own home.
The tooth whitening system we use is Whitewash Home Whitening, and we have different treatment options available:
6% Hydrogen Peroxide kits – 1.5 hour wear time (day)
16% Carbamide Peroxide kits – 4 hour wear time (overnight)
If you are interested in considering Tooth Whitening please discuss this with one of our dentists at your next appointment.
Invisalign
Invisalign is a clear tooth aligner system that is used to correct misaligned teeth. It is a series of clear ‘invisible’ trays that are worn full time (22 hours per day) that gradually move the teeth into alignment.
Invisalign is a fantastic way of getting the smile you want without wearing conventional braces. We offer a free initial consultation to discuss the process. If you are then interested in the treatment we will complete a computer generated simulation of the final result and how your teeth could look, there is a fee charged for this.
If you are interested in considering Invisalign please discuss this with one of our dentists at your next appointment or contact the practice.
Implants
Dental Implants are titanium posts that screw into your bone in the position of a missing natural tooth root. The titanium implant integrates with the bone of the jaw. Then either single crowns, bridges or implant retained dentures can be placed on top.
Dental implant retained crowns and bridges look, feel and function like your natural teeth.
Dental implant retained dentures do not require any adhesives to hold the new teeth in place, the denture ‘locks’ onto the implants and they eliminate the discomfort and insecurity of loose, ill-fitting dentures.
If you are interested in considering Dental Implants please discuss this with one of our dentists at your next appointment.
Fillings
We offer a range of filling materials for tooth restoration within the practice.
On the NHS we are allowed to place composite (tooth coloured) fillings on the front teeth up to the canine. In premolar and molar teeth we are only allowed to place amalgam (metal) fillings. Privately we can place composite fillings in all teeth.
Both filling materials are durable but a lot of patients now choose tooth coloured fillings as it is a more cosmetic option. Your dentist will always discuss all the options available to you, and help you decide what treatment is best for you.
Root Canal Treatment
If your tooth is damaged through decay or trauma, bacteria can get inside it. This causes irritation, pain and swelling. If the pulp (the nerve and blood supply within the tooth) becomes infected, this can spread into the pulp inside the root canal. The aim of root canal treatment is to prevent your tooth from being taken out by removing the damaged pulp and treating the infection. We aim to fully clean and fill the inside of your tooth eliminating pain & infection and allowing you to keep the tooth. It is usually completed over at least two appointments.
Your dentist will fully discuss the procedure with you if Root Canal Treatment is something that you may require.
Dentures
Dentures are a replacement for missing teeth.
They are acrylic teeth fused to a plate and they can replace a single tooth or multiple teeth, these are called a partial denture. They can also replace the full set of teeth, these are called complete or full dentures.
There are various types and designs that can be used. NHS and private options vary in the materials offered both for the base and the teeth fused to the plate. The base can be made of materials like acrylic, flexible acrylic or chrome.
If you are interested in considering a denture to replace missing teeth or you would like to discuss replacing an existing denture please contact the practice or discuss this with one of our dentists at your next appointment.
